What if your email address could demand respect?

The costs of VoIP spam starts to impact you and me. (And I don't even have VoIP service yet)

The costs of VoIP spam (or SPIT as it's called) has started to mount. The most recent hard cost being $600K (which the US public will bare in taxes) to perform a study on VoIP abuse:

Let's face it, there are three choices:

1) Hide your VoIP phone number - In other words; Let's live under a rock.
2) Figure out how we can spam filter VoIP - Sure, this has worked great for email. Haha!
3) Force senders to "respect" recipients with a simple process of small cash guarantees. (You're already paying something for the call - even if a monthly fee - so why not pledge a small 5cent guarantee to prove to the recipient you're not a spammer dropping thousands (even millions) of VoIP messages with a single mouse click. As a respectful caller you'd not be frightened because your guarantee would never be taken by the recipient and therefore would return back to your VoIP account minutes after you hang up.)

Not convinced yet? Here are two things to consider:

1) How could we ever dream of filtering voice messages? I’m not going to say it can’t be done, but think of the complexities and processing power required to invoking a voice recognition comparator. Why should the cost of this technology burden me??? Ah, alas, the cost of disrespect always seems to be forced onto the disrespected.

2) If recipient side filtering does become commonplace (as it has with spam filtering,) think of the net deterrent of having 80% of our VoIP traffic being spam – what a bandwidth burden! Again, who will pay for this??

3) Now, the best for last, if filters become the common, you’ll start to see advertisements regarding some very high % accuracies. First, these accuracies depend highly on the motivation of the tester. Second, any accuracy less than 100% means you will miss some desirable phone calls. Translation, this means you “will” be checking (that is 'listening to’) an endless number of VoIP spam voice mails in your new VoIP spam folder. I can hear it now: "You have 232 new messages, press 1 for yes and 2 to ....??"

Filtering is nothing more than a reactive band-aid and is growing to be more of a liability than an asset. Of course, the liability is destributed out to all us "good guys" so "no big deal" right? Wrong!

The real solution must be proactive; it must remove "all" burden from the recipient - Not some of the burden, not most of burden, ALL OF THE BURDEN!

Give consumers back their mailbox, give them back their (about to be lost) VoIP, and give us all back the terabytes of bandwidth lost daily, to the propagation of unproductive use of irrelevant dribble.
